Laser bacterial reduction is a state-of-the-art laser used to decontaminate bacteria within the gums. This treatment is most commonly used to maintain periodontal disease which is an infection that affects the tissue and bone that supports the teeth.
As tissues are damaged, a pocket develops that is greater that 3 millimeters deep within the gum tissue, called a sulcus. These pockets allow hamful bacteria to grow within them, making it difficult to practice effective oral hygiene. If left untreated, periodontal disease may eventually lead to tooth loss.
The purpose of the decontamination laser is to remove these bacteria from pockets in the gums, to maintain a healthy smile.
